The release, on the eve of a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, included two prisoners held since the late 1970s who were convicted of murdering Israelis. One of them, a Fatah party member who killed an Israeli settler in Hebron, was elected to parliament in 2006.

Twin Algeria Bombings Kill 11

Two car bombs killed 11 people and left 31 wounded in the Algerian city of Bouira, just a day after a suicide bombing in Algiers killed dozens more. Today's bombs targeted a hotel and a military command center, and one of the explosions occurred as a passenger bus drove past. No group has taken responsibility for any of the bombings, reports the New York Times , but in 2006 a long-term insurgent group swore allegiance to al-Qaeda.

McCain Weighs Pro-Choice Running Mate

John McCain's campaign has been pitching the idea of a pro-choice running mate to key state GOP officials around the country, reports the National Review . McCain wants to know how hostile conservative grass-roots activists would be and whether he can win their support if he selects a pro-choice VP such as ex-homeland security secretary Tom Ridge.

Olmert Proposes New West Bank, Gaza Borders

Ehud Olmert has presented Mahmoud Abbas with a plan to withdraw from most of the West Bank and all of the Gaza Strip once the Palestinian Authority retakes Gaza from Hamas. The centerpiece of the proposal is a new permanent border that would keep 7% of the West Bank in Israel in exchange for adding some territory to Gaza. Abbas immediately rejected the proposal because it doesn't create a contiguous Palestinian state, though it offers passage without checkpoints between the West Bank and Gaza.

130K Flee Rebels in Philippines

Fighting in the southern Philippines between government forces and Islamic separatists has now displaced 130,000 people, the New York Times reports, and welfare officials are warning of a humanitarian disaster as battles once confined to two provinces have spread throughout the island of Mindanao. At least 29 people were killed and 88 injured in a wave of blasts in Ahmedabad, which has a history of Hindu-Muslim tensions. Yesterday, at least one person was killed in a similar series of bombings in the technology hub of Bangalore. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Jimmy Carter, Rogue Ex-President

Jimmy Carter does things his own way, pursuing peace initiatives in the Middle East and South America whether Washington likes it or not, and generally redefining what it means to be an ex-president. So it’s no wonder “his mind-set and his policies seem to jibe so well with the attitudes of young people, students, and the blogosphere,” Amy Wilentz writes for New York . “In many ways, Carter seems more relevant than George W. Bush.”

Freed Militants Vow to Continue Fight With Israel

A day after being freed in a prisoner exchange, Hezbollah fighters vowed to continue to fight Israel as they prayed at the grave of a fallen commander, the AP reports. “At this moment, I am yearning more than before to confront them,” Samir Qantar, who had been jailed in Israel for almost 30 years, said at a cemetery near Beirut.

Hezbollah Returns Bodies of 2 Israeli Soldiers

Hezbollah handed over the corpses of two slain Israeli soldiers in an exchange at the Lebanon-Israel border this morning, Reuters reports. The soldiers' capture sparked the 2006 war that killed 1,200 in Lebanon and 159 Israelis. Once the remains are identified, Israel will free five Lebanese prisoners, including one serving a life sentence for killing a 4-year-old girl and her family.
