While guest judges in the past haven't had much effect, DioGuardi will bring youth and relevancy to an aging and increasingly pedestrian panel, he predicts.

Idol Also-Ran Holds Cancer Fundraiser

A former American Idol contestant held a sold-out concert in his Indiana hometown last night to help him raise money for his battle against cancer, AP reports. Luke Menard, 29, was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma shortly after he was eliminated from the show in March, after reaching the top 16. “I don’t think I would want to be in any other town in America right now,” said Menard.

I Was Never In It to Win It: 'Accidental' Idol

David Cook almost didn't audition for American Idol —he was there to offer moral support to his younger brother. But goading from his family kicked off a whirlwind journey that took him from fledgling Midwest rocker to Billboard star. Cook tells Rolling Stone about his modest beginnings—and his early skepticism about the Idol pop machine.

Runner-Up 'Idol' Snags Music Deal

“American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta has inked a deal with “Idol” creator Simon Fuller’s 19 Recordings/Jive Records, the AP reports. The 17-year-old lost to David Cook, 25, a former Missouri bartender, in an upset in last month's finale. Cook signed with the same label, MTV reports; the two albums should both drop in time for the holiday season, with the first official singles out in the fall.

Newest 'Idol': David Cook

The newest "American Idol" is David Cook. The 25-year-old defeated David Archuleta, 17, in the season finale, the New York Post reports. The two received a record 97.5 million votes from viewers, eclipsing the previous mark by 23 million votes. Cook got 56% of the vote. The victory is a bit of a surprise because the judges swooned over Archuleta in Tuesday night's show. Simon Cowell called his performance that night a "knockout."

Overthrow of Castro Leaves 3 Idol Hopefuls

And then there were three. Jason Castro got the boot from "American Idol" last night, leaving David Cook, David Archuleta, and Syesha Mercado remaining in the competition, reports the AP. The dreadlocked Texan was an early favorite but couldn't keep the momentum going. His fate was sealed after he managed to mess up the lyrics to Bob Dylan's "Mr Tambourine Man" on Tuesday's show.

'Idol' White-Out Leaves 4

A willowy Brooke White wept through her last tune as the majority of the 45-million “American Idol” viewers voted to send the 24-year-old nanny packing back to Arizona.
