"There could be a dramatic political realignment in the Northeast if Republicans don’t head it off right now," said one GOP representative.

Reid Takes the Long View

Harry Reid has positioned himself among the Democratic elite in Washington, but that doesn't mean the Senate majority leader is taking his eye off of the 2010 election in his home state of Nevada, reports Politico. Reid is maintaining his power position in the Senate while discreetly launching a campaign to keep his seat and avoid the fate of Tom Daschle in 2004.

Senator Told It's Unethical to Deliver Babies

Sen.Tom Coburn, an obstetrician by profession, is a stubborn guy. Known around the cloakroom as Dr. No, he isn't about to let anyone tell him to stop delivering babies when he's at home in Oklahoma at recess. The Senate Ethics Committee insists it's a conflict of interest, even though he does it pro bono, Politico reports.

GOP Energy-Bill Protest Could Overlap With Dem Convention

Republicans say their measures to suspend the House’s August recess and force a vote on a national energy bill could continue until just before the Democratic National Convention—or beyond, the Hill reports. “Republicans will not rest until we have an honest, up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act,” one GOP leader wrote in a letter to his party—and to rank-and file Democrats, the Chicago Tribune adds.

Detroit Mayor's Mom Survives Primary Scare

It looks like the mother of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will survive the scandal that has engulfed her son and keep her seat in Congress, the Detroit Free Press reports. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick barely held off two challengers in the Democratic primary yesterday, making her the heavy favorite in the November election. Her mayoral son is enmeshed in a City Hall sex scandal, which became the focus of the congressional race.

Republicans Continue House Protest Over Energy Vote

A group of House Republicans continued their protest on the floor of Congress today against Nancy Pelosi's decision to adjourn for summer recess without a vote on their energy plan, which calls for offshore drilling. The lawmakers, speaking in a dimly lit chamber witout a public-address system for the third straight day, say they'll keep it up until Pelosi reconvenes Congress and schedules a vote, reports the Chicago Tribune .

Pelosi Teaches America's Daughters to Complain

Nancy Pelosi’s new book is titled Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters . But if its contents, and the Democrat’s actions, are any indication, America’s daughters mostly have the power to whine, Samantha Sault writes in the Weekly Standard . Amid “tiresome feminist complaining,” Pelosi sees oppression everywhere, committed by men unwilling to let women into their “Secret Sauce Club.”
