Researchers discovered that babies who slept in a room with a fan were 72% less likely to die from SIDS, according to the study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Experts speculated that the fan might prevent the baby from "rebreathing" carbon-dioxide, thought to be a major cause of SIDS.

Stone Planned to Botox 8-Year-Old Son

Actress Sharon Stone consistently overreacted to what she saw as medical issues involving her young son and once planned to use botox injections in his feet to stop foot odor, TMZ reports. The bizarre behavior surfaced in a judge's ruling granting custody of 8-year-old Roan to his father, San Francisco newspaperman Phil Bronstein.

Cloth or Plastic: Greenies Debate the Diaper

For green parents, the choice between disposables or cloth diapers may seem like a catch-22. Silvia Spring weighs the issue in the Boston Globe , but finds no easy answer. While disposables produce up to 70 times more waste than cloth, the latest study concluded that disposable diapers have the same environmental impact as reusable diapers when the effect of laundering cloth diapers is taken into account.

Fed Porn Probe Targets Spears Photo Thief

A stolen photo of teen mom Jamie Lynn Spears breastfeeding has turned what seemed to be a breach of Wal-Mart security into a federal case, TMZ reports. Copies of a dozen snapshots, allegedly purloined when baby daddy Casey Aldridge had legit copies made at a Louisiana store, could result in pornography charges because the underage mom’s breast is exposed. State and federal law enforcement are on the case.

PTA Mom: Gotta Love Palin for Public Schooling Kids

Sandra Tsing Loh likes Barack and Michelle Obama’s politics, but, as a proud PTA mom, wonders why they couldn’t send their kids to a public school in their native Chicago, she writes in the New York Times . The inclusion of middle-class or affluent children, especially from families who value education, has been shown to benefit poor children immensely.

Time to Raise Driving Age?

Is 16 too young to drive? A safety group today began a push to encourage states to follow the lead of Japan, China, Russia, and most of Europe by raising the legal age to 18, the Detroit Free Press reports. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for youths aged 15 to 20, and the numbers have been rising over the last decade.

Single Men Seek Fatherhood, Partner Optional

The ranks of do-it-alone dads are increasing, and many of these men are becoming single fathers by choice, reports the New York Times . There are no specific statistics, but evidence suggests that both gay and straight single men are increasingly seeking fatherhood. “I absolutely would want a partner, but I couldn’t let my life wait for that random event," said one dad-to-be.

Web Lets Parents Peek Into School Day

Parents are taking advantage of new web tools to monitor their children’s activities at school, the Los Angeles Times reports. A California program set to debut next year will allow doting parents to keep an eye on what kids buy for lunch, and let school officials know about food allergies and other restrictions. But some think the innovation may hinder childrens' independence.

TV Not All Bad for Kids, Study Discovers

TV has long been blamed for social ills from childhood obesity to plunging SAT scores, but a pair of researchers say the "idiot box" could actually be doing kids some good, the Wall Street Journal reports. Examined test data from 1965 showed that children with more access to TV generally scored higher in cognitive abilities. The results were particularly marked among kids from non-English-speaking homes and children of parents with little education.
