Reggie Bush is the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner for the second time in his life. The Heisman Trophy Trust on Wednesday announced he would be getting his Heisman Trophy back, more than a decade after Bush returned the award following an NCAA investigation that determined he received improper benefits while playing for the University of Southern California. He'll also be invited to all Heisman Trophy ceremonies going forward, reports the AP. More:

  • "We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments," said Michael Comerford, president of the Heisman Trophy Trust. "We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years," he explained, with the trust flagging the fact that "student athlete compensation" has become "an accepted practice and appears here to stay."
  • Indeed, Bush immediately began pushing for his trophy to be reinstated after the NCAA approved rules that allowed student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness in 2021.
  • "Personally, I'm thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I'm honored to return to the Heisman family," Bush said in a statement to ESPN. "I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization."
  • ESPN notes USC will receive the replica trophy, raising its number of Heisman Trophies to a record-setting eight. Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame have seven each.
  • One more trivia fact: The 784 first-place votes Bush received in 2005 were the fifth most in Heisman history.
